The Global Innovation Exchange or “GIX” will provide students with project-based learning through a pioneering new partnership established jointly by Tsinghua University and the University of Washington, with foundational support from Microsoft, at a new facility in the Seattle metropolitan area.

Why: GIX represents a unique and equal partnership between two of the world’s leading universities, backed by one of the world’s leading companies, with other universities and organizations expected to join, and located in a region renowned as a center for innovation. While a number of American universities have opened facilities in China, this is the first time a Chinese research university has established a physical presence in the United States.

When: GIX will open its doors in the fall of 2016 with an inaugural program based on a master’s degree in technology innovation to support the growth in connected devices. GIX will grow with the addition of new degree and certificate programs, as well as additional fields of study, over the next decade.

Impact: Within a decade, we expect that learners will be studying at GIX, in a holistic, project-based environment. GIX’s emphasis on the interplay between technology development, design, and entrepreneurship will prepare students to contribute solutions to a range of global challenges, including on issues such as mobile health, sustainable development, and the continuing advance of cloud computing and the Internet of Things.
