HE Peng: first cohort student of GIX
 
He Peng, one of the first cohort of GIX students will graduate in 2019. He has built a startup block chain company and started his own business.
GIX spoke with He Peng about his journey in GIX and what motivated his idea of building his own company.
 
Q: Where did you graduate before entering GIX?
I graduated from Tsinghua University with a bachelor’s degree in automation design and business administration with a bachelor's degree in engineering design.
 
Q: Why did you choose to come to GIX? What do you think is special with GIX?
In fact, like many of my classmates, there are many directions in choosing my own career when I graduate, and I am in a very confused state. Especially during the period of 2015-2016, there was a boom in science and engineering in China. With a part of economic management background, I also gradually raised the yearning for the financial elite life, so I started to try some opportunities for financial studies. At the same time, I also wanted to go abroad to see the world. During that time, I was in the midst of a variety of choices: applying for postgraduate recommendation, going abroad, changing career. 
By chance, I learned about GIX. At that time, it was the key moment of Tsinghua's internationalization when Schwarzman College and GIX were established. I was touched by the vision of GIX to use technology and innovation to solve problems and help the development of society. I really feel that technological innovation is the key to solving the urgent realistic problems of modern China. So I applied for GIX.
 
Q: Can you talk about what GIX brought you?
I think the biggest achievement is that it gives us the opportunity to get the most out of the industry while we are still at school. The most impressive thing is that the essence of using technology to solve problems and using technology to enhance engineering is to find a viable complementary technology and architecture solutions to the huge gap between scientific research frontline and industry solutions. For example, if you hold a hammer in your hand, and when you see a thing, you hammer it down as on a nail, you will make everything messy. This is also why GIX has been always emphasizing project orientation and design thinking.
Secondly, it is worth mentioning that while being here, I have gained new experience of doing a project in a new environment. As the first physical campus overseas established by Tsinghua with a project-based learning model, GIX is exploring on curriculum design, cooperation modes and teacher-student relationship. As one of the first cohort of GIX students, I have experienced courses reforms and the setup of Students Union, which was unforgettable experience for me.  
 
Q: Can you talk about your project or research? Any plans for the future?
After entering GIX, I have tried various types of projects, including artificial intelligence, deep learning, driverless technology, sensing systems, virtual reality and so on.
Since 2016, I have been involved in the block chain field and achieved something in this field. I have completed several projects, including charitable funds and traceability, lifelong learning records, gamification blockchain games, distributed voting community and other projects. Among them, the game AlchemyGod has won the third place in level of activity at apps of Ethereum in the world. I also reached cooperation with world-renowned organizations and listed companies on many other projects.
I also applied for patents for the system designs I proposed for games and hierarchical structures. Based on these patents and achievements, I am setting up a team to build a startup company which focuses on technology research and development of universal block solutions. With cooperation with existing industries, I hope to achieve a more complete industry-level block chain solution.
For the future, I still have some confidence in block chain technology. The block chain technology is the first time that technology has directly realized the change of production relationship. It has successfully reached a consensus on the premise of mutual distrust with cryptography, which provides possibilities for all distributed services. It also provides a framework for the real arrival of Web 3.0. Based on this confidence, I will make my career better and better, and I hope that I can add glory to the GIX.
